Saskatchewan Outdoor Winter Challenge

Fellow Scouters,

For the 4th year I would like to promote the Winter Outdoor Challenge that the Saskatchewan Scout Council in Canada offers. You can find the details at this web page:

http://www.planimetrics.com/~akela/ev_woc.html

WHAT IS IT? The challenge is a series of activities that you do with your youth. The purpose of this challenge is to get Scouting members outside during the winter. There are activities for all ages. Leaders carry out the activities at their local level and if they want, can obtain a crest for completing the challenge.

WHO CAN DO IT? Anyone. Troops from all over Canada, from 8-10 US states (Georgia and California come to mind), and a few other countries (England, Singapore) have also taken part. If you live somewhere that you don't have snow then you have my sympathy BUT you can also modify the objectives to fit your circumstances. One year a troop in California took part and build a sand quinzee while some younger kids made sand angels instead of snow angels.

WHY DO IT? For the fun. To get your kids outside more if you feel they need that. To allow your kids to earn a crest from another country that they can add to their Scout blanket or vest. The crest can be seen on the above website. Some of the Leaders in warm states and warm countries like the idea that their kids will earn a crest that shows a winter scene. Also many of the activities might be things that you already have planned so this could be supplemental to your own plans.

COST? The challenge is free to use. If you lived in Saskatchewan then the crests would also be free. If you live outside Saskatchewan and want the crests that go with the challenge then they are $2.00US each + shipping. This cost is almost identical to the cost of production. Shipping is cheap. For $1.00 you can get something like 6 crests shipped to you and for about $3.00 you can get up to 50 shipped.

In the past I've promoted this as staff but this year I've started new employment (at an animal humane shelter) so now I promote this as a volunteer. I think it is a good program and gets Scout members outdoors in winter.

Please post or distribute this as would be appropriate for your Scout Council. Information is available on the web site listed above but I can also answer any questions if you want to ask me directly. Thank you. I hope you take part.

Yours in Scouting,

Kevin Moore
